Students are interviewed and tested on their arrival, and allocated to a class that corresponds to their test result and level of English. There are 4 main levels of English at Sheffield.

- elementary
- pre-intermediate
- intermediate
- upper intermediate
- advanced
Every 6 weeks, students are re-tested, and if they reach the required standard, they are able to progress to the next level. Between tests, students who wish to be promoted can complete a challenge assessment to ascertain if they are able to go up a level.
